Pillar Candle Supplies

Prepare for making your pillar candles by checking if you've got all the pillar candle making supplies you need.

1. Pillar candle wax Your basic pillar candle supply is wax. Take paraffin or beeswax. Paraffin wax is cheaper and easier to find, and beeswax is softer and already aromatic. Since for making pillar candles a medium melt point wax is recommended, try getting the type of wax that melts on about 136° F - 141° F.

2. Pillar candle wick A flat cotton core waxed wick is one of the types suitable for pillar candles. The size of the wick depends on the diameter of your mold. You also need a mold sealer/wick holder bar or jiffy wicker to seal the wick hole in the mold. Or improvise with metal and rubber washers and pencils.

3. Pillar candle mold There are metal, acrylic or latex molds for making pillar candles. You can even use milk cartons, tins or PVC pipes. For easier release, before you begin with making your pillar candles, you can spray the mold with Mold Release Spray.

4. Additives, dyes and fragrances There are waxes that have stearic acid and vybar already combined into the wax, and there are also precolored waxes and waxes that are naturally aromatic. If you are adding dyes, scents and additives on your own, you need about 3-4 tablespoons of stearic acid, 1 teaspoon of vybar, and ¾ - 1 ounce of fragrance per pound of wax. Candle dye comes in liquid, block or flake forms. You can use a potato peeler or kitchen knife to cut pieces from dye blocks. Experiment with amounts of color you put into the wax, start with small amounts and then check the result by putting a drop of wax on some wax paper. If you don't like it, add more color or more wax, whichever you need. It is always good to check with your supplier for their general measurement instructions.

It's safer if your candles are not close together when burning. Keep them around 3 inches apart.
